Bookish & Not So Bookish Thoughts

is a weekly meme hosted by Christine over at Bookishly Boisterous, where we post things that are on our minds.  Head over there and check it out!

I think I might still be wreaked from last week, but I have little energy, and fewer thoughts.  I have been reading a ton, and trying to rest since I have had an awful, storm induced headache for three days.  therefore, I have decided to share some visual thoughts, that make me laugh.

1. It’s only funny until it happens to you.  Often.

2.  All the time.  My kids cringe.  I am proud of my knowledge and vocab (or profanity).

3.  We means the dogs.  Within 10 minutes there is fur, dirt, and paw prints everywhere.  And mud!

4.  So much wine.

5.  They plot against us.

6.  Unless that store is Walmart.

7.  Love this.

8.  I could live on bread, cheese, and wine.  Coffee in the morning, then repeat.

8.  This happened.

Bookish & Not So Bookish Thoughts

is a weekly meme hosted by Christine over at Bookishly Boisterous, where we post things that are on our minds.  Head over there and check it out!

1.Happy Autumnal Equinox! (yesterday)  I love the fall and it seems like it is actually here.  The highs are mid 70s but the lows at night are pretty chilly.  Can’t wait for the first fire of the year!

Unknown

2.  I have decided to try to read some of the books on the short list for the Booker Man prize, so I got A Little Life and A Spool of Blue Thread from the library.  A Little Life is not a little book, it’s over 700 pages (not large print by the way) long!  And not a fast read- but I am loving it!

3.  There are bears where I live, and I know this.  They frequently walk through my yard, and that is their right.  I do have a very real fear that my stupid chocolate Lab will try to chase a cub off, only to have Momma attack him.

4.  I watched The Muppets Show last night.  It was funny, in a creepy and disturbing way.

5.  I saw this on Buzzfeed and now I am dying to own it.

original-22188-1442590604-3

I can’t believe a 17 year old made this.  Unfortunately, it is a part of a book of these maps that goes on sale today, but not yet available to purchase as a print.  I want to buy the print, and then hang it right behind my desk so I can turn around and look at it whenever I want.

6.  I  am nervous about my upcoming run in NYC this weekend, but am thankful it is after the Pope has left.

7.  Banned Books week starts on Monday and I am hoping to slip in a reading of a banned book.  What is your favorite Banned Book?

Guess I am out of interesting thought for now

Bookish & Not So Bookish Thoughts

is a weekly meme hosted by Christine over at Bookishly Boisterous, where we post things that are on our minds.  Head over there and check it out!

 1. I am preparing myself already to totally fail my Goodreads reading challenge.  Last year I did great- I read 100 books.  This year, I decided to up that to 115- and as of now I am 13 books behind.  I hope I can at least get to 100.

2.  Just when I finally relented and bought the pumpkin candle, its back up to 85 degrees.  But goes to 49 at night.  September is a bitch.

3.  People shouldn’t be allowed to bring their adorable new puppies to high school sporting events.  It’s really not fair.  Especially that extremely smug man with the beautiful black lab puppy he is training as a seeing eye dog.  Actually Jackass, my dogs DO know who is boss- them.  or maybe its a democracy.  At least I love my dogs.

4.  Speaking of which, does anyone know the signs of dementia in dogs?  My 12 year old lab is getting a little wacky.

IMG_3292-1

5.  I watched Stephen King on The Late Show last week- he is so funny!  Any big King fans out there?

What is your favorite book by him?

6.  I know I need to start running, so today, as soon as the kids left, I went back to bed.  But I am going to go for a run in a little while. Maybe.

7.  I watched the debate last night- I wanted to dunk my head in a bucket of ice water afterward.  Thank god for wine- 2016 is going to be an ugly year.

8.  I am still reading The Girl in the Spider’s Web.  It is going a little slow for me, but I am hoping we are getting to a good part.

9.  I walked into the library yesterday and didn’t take anything out- yah willpower!

I was actually returning a book that was 2 days late, and I had an appointment, so I had no time, but still.

10.  They revealed the short list for the Man Booker Prize.  I have not read any of them.  I am ashamed.

Bookish & Not So Bookish Thoughts

is a weekly meme hosted by Christine over at Bookishly Boisterous, where we post things that are on our minds.  Head over there and check it out!

1. I have to take a day very soon to organize my reading.  I have been a little bad in terms of buying/accepting books, even so far as to check books out of the library and then never read them. I see some shelving, a white board and dry erase markers in my future.

2.  The chocolate lab just will not stop eating poop.  We live on 5 acres and I am lazy, so they just get let out whenever they want to go.  I have tried everything but actually walking out with him every time.  I know- the answer lies within me.

3.  I am having a friend’s son over for the night while they are away- any good vegetarian ideas for lunch and dinner?

4.  I just read that some guy slipped into someone’s house while they were taking out the garbage and hid under the bed for three days.  Three days!!!  He even charged his cell phone while he was there.  That scares the shit out of me.  There really are monsters under the bed.

5.  I started drinking my coffee black.  It is pretty awesome.  I definitely feel a little badass.  But wow, it really sucks cold.

6.  I read Circling the Sun about Beryl Markham, and now I am dying to read more things about Africa in the early 20th century.  Beth Fish Reads just posted a great list of books just for that. How fortuitous!

7.  I am have about ten books looming on my horizon- all very good books I am sure- but there is something about rereading favorite books in the summertime.  Do any of you have favorite rereads?

8.  I am making smoothies in the morning before I torture myself at the gym.  I have the standard blueberry/banana one down, but I would like to change it up a bit.  Any good smoothie recipes out there?

9.  The heatwave we had has finally broken and people are happy again.  It’s like a scene from a Disney movie with the birds chirping and the butterflies fluttering.  Then-bam!- yellow lab kills one of those chirping birds and spits it out on the driveway.  The rest of the birds go freaking crazy, squawking and flying all over.  Now I am afraid to go out of the house again.

10.  If I have to see another web article on Donald Trump I might vomit.  I can’t believe John Stewart is retiring at this moment.  It’s too easy!  I guess I will just have to wait until Colbert comes back in September.

Bookish & Not So Bookish Thoughts

1.  I started working out with a trainer last week.  I think when you hit your 40s, you go a little crazy.  I am aching ALL over- can’t lift my arms more than half way.  This might seriously affect my wine drinking.

bdb0942a4981ad49dab054066f13ff2a

2.  I am going to Pittsburgh to visit my son, who is being kind enough to set aside an hour or so of his time so we can take him out to eat.  Seriously, he told me he has to get back for “activities” even though it is Parent’s Weekend and we are driving 6 hours each way.  This might make him leaving for college next summer a little easier for me.

3.  I read Circling The Sun by Paula McCain in one day, and I didn’t realize it was based on a real woman until I read the epilogue.

4.  I have Go Set A Watchman sitting on my kitchen counter.  I am reluctant to read it for a few reasons, not the least being I really don’t believe Harper Lee actually wanted it ever published.  I also don’t like the idea of losing faith in Atticus.  Sort of like finding out Harry Potter turned to the Dark Arts after a mid life crisis.

9780062409850_p0_v9_s260x420

5.  I had a bear in the yard.  Now every time I drive up the driveway, I am afraid.

7.  I hate that Goodreads doesn’t count my endless rereads in my reading challenge.  Why does it NOT count when I reread The Hunger Games for the 8th time, just because it was there???

8.  I started some tomato plants from seed back in April.  I had to repot them 3 times, and now they are taller than me.  The kicker?  I forget what kind of tomatoes they are supposed to be.

51vRAvQcqeL._SX425_

9.  We watch The Brink with Tim Robbins and Jack Black- it was AWESOME!  Can’t wait for more episodes.

10.  Any suggestions on things to do in Pittsburgh?  Since I will have so much time on my hands?

1.  Did you ever have “that” kind of a day- where everything is BLAH?  I am having one.  My solution- I am going to the library.

2.  Does anyone have the Kindle Unlimited?  I am tempted-but-Is it worth it?  I figure I impulse buy at least $10 worth every month any way.

3.  I started reading The Martian yesterday- I am only 5% in-my question is- Does it get good?  I am up to the part where he is figuring out how to make water.  My eyes are glazing over like they did back in high school during Chem class.  I hated Chem.  I actually hated Walter White BEFORE he started making the meth.

4.  I am listening to The Illiad narrated by Matthew Crawley (Dan Stevens), the new Beast.  I love him, but am not sure his proper, clipped British accents gels with the rough and tumble Agamemnon and Achilles.

5.  Speaking of the Beast, did you see the complete cast for the upcoming live Beauty and the Beast?  It is AWESOME! Click here.  Be my guest.

6.  Last night my father in law came over and I made a nice big dinner- sauce with meatballs and sausage, manicotti, Italian bread, and salad, with cheesecake for dessert.  I had a meatball.  :-((

7.  I went to my first high school track meet this week.  My son decided to give it a try this year to keep in shape.  He is doing hurdles and high jump.

That was two hours of my life I will never get back.

8.  We are shipping up to Boston (aahhhh) to visit some colleges.  I am very excited- to not make beds for a day or so.

Off to the library to feel better!

Bookish & Not So Bookish Thoughts

is a weekly meme hosted by Christine over at Bookishly Boisterous, where we post things that are on our minds.  Head over there and check it out!

1.  I am heading to an author luncheon this afternoon and I am very excited.  My sister and Mom will be there too.  The author is Regina Calcaterra and her Book is Etched in Sand– about her difficult childhood in Long Island.

This is actually my first author event and I am very excited!

2.  I picked up the audiobook of The Illiad at my library yesterday because it is read by Dan Stevens (Matthew Crawley from Downton Abbey) and everyone seems to think I am crazy.

3.  My husband continues his audiobook reading and I couldn’t be more excited.  After he finished The Stand, I had a problem finding a good one at the library for him to read next, so I grabbed The Paris Architect– a historical fiction I had read last year and enjoyed.  Next up is The Book Thief for him.  I will bring him over to our side!

4.  I am rereading The Handmaid’s Tale (again) because my daughter is reading it for her English class.  While at first I thought it might be a tough read for 15 year olds, I applaud the teacher for picking it.  I am excited to see how my daughter and her friends like it and what they think about it.  She just started and already had a cool insight- the handmaids are named after their commanders.

5.  I think spring might actually be here in Northern NJ!  My daffodils have finally bloomed and I sat outside and read yesterday afternoon.

6.  The hubby and I are celebrating our 20th anniversary this June and decided to celebrate by renting a house on the beach in OBX with the kids and the dogs.  While not terribly romantic, it makes sense- they are teenagers and this will probably be the last big anniversary with them living at home.

7.  We are toying with the idea of renewing our vows on the beach.  My daughter will be the maid of honor and my son the best man.  The yellow lab will be the flowergirl and the chocolate the ring bearer.  Sound cheesy, but I am actually getting a little excited by the idea.  Now I just need to make it happen. Ideas are much appreciated.

8.  And because of #7, I have to get in shape quickly!  When I told my daughter, she didn’t understand why.  She said this way there was more of me to love.  She should go into politics.

9.  Tomorrow I am off to Atlantic City.  This is probably one of my least favorite places to visit, but my Mom LOVES it and it is her birthday.  To celebrate, we are staying over and going to see Frankie Valli.  Yes, it seems he is still alive.  There had better be LOTS of wine involved.

10.  And the NHL playoffs have begun, which means I get a whole lot of reading time in the evenings- excerpt when the NY Rangers are on of course.  We actually scored tickets to Saturday nights game- so excited.  My daughter was invited to this big party by a very popular girl.  She was so excited to be invited and immediately said sorry, she can’t make it- wouldn’t want to miss the game!

Bookish & Not So Bookish Thoughts

is a weekly meme hosted by Christine over at Bookishly Boisterous, where we post things that are on our minds.  Head over there and check it out!

1.  I am TOO excited by the news that Harper Lee “found” the sequel for To Kill A Mockingbird!  I pre-ordered it.  Didn’t you always wonder what kind of woman Scout grew up to be?

Unknown

But I am not too sure about the title-Go Set A Watchman?

2.  My son is taking his required 6 hour driving lessons this weekend.  I am a little scared.  Can I still by a car that doesn’t have a navigation system?  Or maybe one without a radio at all?  I better go buy lots of bubble wrap!

3.  I almost laughed myself to death when I read this-

http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/texas-boy-suspended-bringing-ring-power-school-article-1.2099103

A little boy in Texas was suspended for making “terroristic threats” because he brought in a replica of The One Ring and told a classmate he was going to make him disappear.

Really?

I loved Book Riots take on it-” Looking at the facts of this case, I think the school authorities did the right thing. In fact, I think they might have let Steward Junior off light. The only thing that stopped this kid from carrying out his kiddie-sized terrorist plot was a lack of understanding about how to properly use The One Ring. Putting it on someone’s head won’t work. You have to put it on their finger, duh. Just think if Steward had succeeded. The poor victim could have been permanently traumatized from all that evil Sauron mojo that screws with the mind of anyone wearing the ring.”

i-XrS6Z5h-1050x10000

4.  Ok- measles outbreak?  Can I get this shit?

5.  I have a real reading problem.  Whenever I read a Stephen King novel, I want to keep reading King!  I read Needful Things last week-it was good, not great, but then I immediately started looking for another King novel.  So I picked up The Dead Zone-LOVED it!  And then stared looking again.  I had to force myself to pick up an ARC that has been sitting there giving me the stink eye.  Help!

6.  We have had a few storms (and a few no shows-hello Blizzard of 2015)  Every time I see snow in the forecast, I make sure I have: 1- soup ingredients, 2- wine and 3- books.  Seriously, I ran errands the other day right before it snowed- the wine store and the library.  I have issues.

10403022_901407593224629_411786260956301152_n

7.  My husband and I have been invited to a wine tasting at the home of one of his work colleagues.  I have never met any of these people and I am wondering what I should wear?  Keeping in mind I have been acting like a hibernating bear these past two weeks, I can’t even imagine getting dressed up.

8.  We had friends over to watch the Super Bowl, and while I love football, I really love watching the commercials.  The Fiat one was awesome, but I want to know- where can I find that farmer from the Budweiser puppy commercial?

My snowbound hibernating brain doesn’t have anymore thoughts today!

Bookish & Not So Bookish Thoughts

is a weekly meme hosted by Christine over at Bookishly Boisterous, where we post things that are on our minds.  Head over there and check it out!

Haven’t been able to join in for so long!!

1.  I finally cave and bought my own Kindle.  Teen daughter was not very keen on sharing any longer, and I cracked my iPad trying to kill a fly.  I had about 5 ebooks waiting to be reviewed, so I gave in and bought a refurbed paperwhite.  I REALLy wish I didn’t like it.

2.  On the same topic, I actually got my mom to start using a Kindle.  I gave her my daughter’s old one (while I was happy with my as yet uncracked iPad) and loaded tons of books on there for her.  This was on Mother’s Day, and she just now read a book on it.  Mind you, she reads about 4-6 books a week.  She hates change.  Now I know where I get it from.

3.  My yellow Lab,Katie, is getting on in years (11+) and has started showing signs of advanced arthritis in her back legs, so at the last vet visit, we put her on Glucosamine and Prevacox (an NSAID).  Now she is a BAD BAD dog again.  She ran away from us while we were vacationing in Maryland (sorry grumpy farmer who was not happy she came to visit) and just last night she got into a pretty nasty fight with a raccoon.  No blood was drawn, but there was lots of hissing and plenty of hurt feelings.  I think we were better off when she wasn’t so spry.  This is the dog I thought Marley was based on, only a little worse behaved and not as cute.

IMG_0044

4.  I know I am about a year behind, but I am finally reading The Cuckoo’s Calling and I love it!  I had my doubts about Rowling’s future after The Casual Vacancy :-0, but this is great.  What is the sequel called??

16160797

5.  I am thinking about signing up for Bout of Books this August.   The dates work very much in my favor, as that is the week that practice starts for fall sports at the kids’ high school, and they are playing field hockey and football.  Their practices are over 3 hours each and the school is about 45 minutes away, so I see myself with LOTS of time to kill.

6.  I thought the polar vortex was only supposed to happen in the winter!  Yesterday there high only reached 75 here, and it went down to 53 at night!  This is supposed to be the hottest part of the summer.  Upside is of course the lower electric bill-love open windows!!

7.  We recently vacationed in a small town in Maryland called Cambridge, where we happened upon a little shop called A Few of My Favorite Things.  They sell wine, gourmet cheese, and gourmet chocolates.  Heaven!  We went back almost every day.  Now if  only they sold books too, I would never have left.

Most importantly-

1.  A big CONGRATULATIONS to Christine over at Bookishly Boisterous on the birth of her beautiful son!

2.  I went to my library’s semiannual book sale and I SCORED big time!  I got over a dozen books for just over $5.  But then I got home and looked at my bookshelves and realized I needed a little self improvement.  So I reshelved everything and I realized I have a WHOLE shelf of books I haven’t read- just sitting there.  I resolved I would read at least one from that shelf every week.  I am heading to the library after my run- let’s see how my will power holds out!

3.  I love Book Riot as you might know.  They had an article on books that were ruined by school.  Mine was The Canterbury Tales, but really not many others-thank you again Mrs. Chapman.

4.  The Harris Poll real eased it’s Top Ten Most Liked Books in America.  –  When they break it down into sub categories. it’s so funny!  I never realized so many (maybe too many) people liked GWTW so much.  Maybe they’re lying?  What do you think?
