August Wrap Up

Wow- this month has totally flown by!  I can’t believe it is Labor Day weekend already.  Our summer was very busy- had some nice trips thrown in there, but I think we are ready to go back to our routine-plus it is disgustingly humid in New Jersey lately and I HATE humidity.

The family went on a great trip up to Lake Placid, NY.  It is so beautiful up there, especially in the summer.  We hiked (ugh), went to the top of Whiteface Mt., saw the High Falls Gorge, and relaxed by the lake.  The kids learned to paddle board, and did some canoeing, while I lounged and read!!

I also went to Boston with just my husband- Freedom Trail and all!!

Here is what I did here on the blog and reading-wise:

I was so excited to see Book-alicious Mama post that she had joined in a read along of The Book Thief, ahead of the November release of the much anticipated movie!  I went to see the write up at It’s All About Books, and decided to join in too.  Go on over there and check out the plan-Hope you join too!

The extraordinary #1 New York Times bestseller that will be in movie theaters on November 15, 2013, Markus Zusak’s unforgettable story is about the ability of books to feed the soul.

It is 1939. Nazi Germany. The country is holding its breath. Death has never been busier, and will become busier still.

Liesel Meminger is a foster girl living outside of Munich, who scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can’t resist–books. With the help of her accordion-playing foster father, she learns to read and shares her stolen books with her neighbors during bombing raids as well as with the Jewish man hidden in her basement.

In superbly crafted writing that burns with intensity, award-winning author Markus Zusak, author of I Am the Messenger, has given us one of the most enduring stories of our time.

Here is what happened with me this week

Ok, it has been a slow week reading wise (I feel like I have been saying that a whole lot this summer, but it is true :-()

We celebrated my son’s 15th birthday, then the next day I met my husband in Boston for a few days.

I went to Paul Revere’s house, stood on the site of the Boston Massacre, and had tons of yummy food.

We went to Dergins Park, The Green Dragon (where the Sons of Liberty planned the Boston Tea Party), and Union Oyster House, which is the oldest continually run restaurant in the country!

Get why there wasn’t that much reading time?

I did get to read on the plane, despite the tiny woman next to constantly hitting me with her elbow.

I finished

The Girl You Left Behind

(hoping to get a review posted later today or by wednesday the latest.

Whew!

Now 7 (hopefully) interesting things about myself-

The first three happened after I turned 40- must be losing my mind

1.  I started skiing for the first time ever this past February-I am still scared!

2.  I started running two months ago-first time since high school- I even signed up for my first 5k in a month called Tunnel To Towers- you should check out this amazing story here.

3.  I started this blog a few months back because I started forgetting which books I had already read.  Too many times I would get 10 pages in and say-Darn, I think I already read this.

4.  I am a dog addict.  If I see a dog, I HAVE to ask if I can pet it.  Not that friendly with humans, though.

5.  I reread my favorite books over and over.

6.  I never knew parenting teenagers would be this hard.  I feel compelled to call my mom everyday and say I am sorry.

7.  As corny as it sounds-my husband is truly the love of my life.

The Hunger Games- Hello my old friend!!!

Yup- I finally had an ah-ha moment last Saturday on the 5 hour car ride up to lovely Lake Placid!!  I had downloaded a bunch of ARCs from Net Galley and was all ready to plow through a few.  When I turned the my daughter’s kindle on, and went to the home page, what should I see at the top of the list?

The Hunger Games Trilogy!!

One of my favorite series was just sitting there inviting me back.

I did it.

Just finished Mockingjay last night.

And I LOVED IT!

It was like seeing an old friend that I didn’t realize how much I missed.

This wasn’t my first reread of this series, but it is the first reread I have done since starting this blog.

Up next-I am going to get those ARCs done, then maybe some other old friends, Harry & Ron, Lizzy Bennet, maybe some hobbits and elves?

July Wrap Up

I have never done a monthly wrap up, but I am sitting here in a quiet house (both kids at camp) and it is POURING out,  and I am not running around like crazy for once, so here it goes!

July was a slow month for me reading wise because I have been surprisingly busy.  I began the month in Bermuda (I SO wish I was still there), and have been running around, errands, town pool, etc  the rest of the time.  I decided to start running- and NO nothing was chasing me- for the first time in over twenty years.  I am slowly working myself up to be able to run in this years Tunnel To Towers 5k that honors a friend I lost in 9/11, Stephen Siller.  So, it’s been a busy time.

Here is what I did reading/blog wise:

Books Read

I managed to finish 6 books this month, which is ok.  I read-

The Wishing Tree

Summerset Abbey

The Prodigal

The Clock of Life

The Light in the Ruins

The Dark Monk

I think I liked The Light in The Ruins by Chris Bohjalian best, followed very closely by The Dark Monk, which I will post a review for tomorrow.

I published 12 posts, 5 of which were reviews.

I am getting back into a groove now, finding time to run, clean, and read/post all in one day.  It will help that the darling daughter will be in field hockey camp from 9-4 all of next week.  I hope to get lots done, before heading for a mini vacay in Lake Placid next week.

How was your July?

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke & the Bookish.  It’s awesome. Every Tuesday, the lovely ladies over there give us book bloggers wonderful and fun topics to create our lists!  Check out what others have posted by going over there! http://brokeandbookish.blogspot.com

This week’s topic is

Top Ten Words/Topics the will make you NOT pick up a book

There isn’t a lot that will turn me off from a book in an instant, but here are a few-

1.  Royalty

I don’t mean the awesome news going on right now, I mean the trend of books all about “those” royals.  I did enjoy The Other Boleyn Girl, but enough already!

2.  Vampires

Enough said about that.

3.  Romance

My mom still loves Danielle Steel, but I can’t read these types of books.  I think Steele is actually the best of the bunch-no Harlequin Romances for me.  The heaving bosoms and flowing hair is a turn off – which leads me to the next-

4.  Pecks & Abs

I love me some eye candy as much as the next girl, but come on!  What is with the rash of covers out there with all these totally ripped guys??? Unless it is a picture book, you are NOT getting my attention!

5.  Young Love

I am not a grouchy old lady, and I think falling in love is great and all, but I also remember how painful it was to be a teenager, never mind a teen in love.

6.  Space

No interest whatsoever, period.

7.  Zombies

My 15 year old son went to see World War Z.  He loved it.  I am not a 15 year old boy.

8.  Dystopian

Calm down!  I loved The Hunger Games trilogy, and I know there are some really great Dystopian books out there, but it almost seems like every other book is this genre.

9.  Time Travel

Too confusing sometimes!

10.  New Adult

What is this?  I get the Young Adult-what the hell is New Adult???

I know many of you out there disagree- these are just the things that will make me NOT grab a book-

some examples

Today’s topic is:

Top Ten Best/Worst Movie Adaptations

This was a difficult topic for me, as I almost always think the book was FAR better than the movie.  When I tried to split the list 5 best and 5 worst, I had a list of 20 worst! (don’t get me started- as much as I loved the HP movies-that second Dumbledore still pisses me off)

So I forced myself to try to come up with what I thought was the 10 best-got 8.  Here is goes-

1.  The Help

I though they did a really good job adapting the story here- of course it loses a little something-especially since each character is so well defined and have such strong voices, but it was till a very good movie and pretty true to the book.

2.  Jurassic Park

I actually saw the movie before I read the book- spilled popcorn all over my date when that Rex jumped out- and I am glad I did since it is a great movie but the book has so much more going on that I probably would have been disappointed.

(These next two are cheats)

3.  Band of Brothers

I know it was a miniseries and not a movie, but it was SO well made-thank you Mr. Hanks.  I loved this series SO much, that hubby and I still rewatch occasionally on DVD-at that’s 10 ours!!

4.  Pride & Prejudice

I am talking about the BBC miniseries version-no offense Kiera Knightly-I love you but you are not my quintessential Lizzy Bennet.

Colin Firth= Mr. Darcy-that is all I am saying.

5.  The Silence of the Lambs

So well written and creepy, though I personally thought Hannibal was a touch more good looking than Anthony Hopkins-my apologies, Sir Anthony.

6.  Rebecca

One of my favorite novels really translated well into film-possibly my favorite Hitchcock-though I am STILL totally creeped out by birds.  Laurence Olivier was brilliant as Maxim de Winter!

And Mrs. Danvers-perfectly creepy!!

7.  Gone with the Wind

I love this book-and the movie stands up to it quite well.  Vivien Leigh and Clark Gable-oh my!!

and my favorite-

8.  To Kill a Mockingbird

To me, Atticus Finch is the best written male characters.  Gregory Peck played him wonderfully.

What do you think are the best/worst film adaptations?

Pink Beaches-here I come!!!!

Turn The Page Reviews will be quiet for the next week, as my husband and I head to Bermuda to celebrate 18 years of wedded bliss (bliss will be me, on a lounge on the pink sand, reading all day long-heaven!)

While I am sorry not to post for almost a whole week, we will be staying where there is no internet-can you believe a place like that still exists???

Enjoy your week-read some great books-and I will check in when we return.

Until then!

Its Monday! What are you Reading? is a weekly bookish meme held on Book Journey by Sheila. It’s a great place to discuss your week in reading and see what others are reading too.

Tough weekend- my son left to spend a month studying engineering in PA.  I will admit, there were tears-mine.  So, on to the books-I sound like a broken record when I say AGAIN, that I wasn’t that into reading that much this week. so, here is what happened-

This week, I finished-

And The Mountains Echoed by Khaled Hosseini

16115612

I reviewed-

Sight Reading by Daphne Kalotay

16248271

Sight Reading-a review

I am currently reading-

The Last Original Wife by Dorthea Benton Frank

And up next is-

The Prodigal by Michael Hurley

17929231

For 2,000 years, Christendom has believed that faith and penitence are the narrow gates through which all who seek heaven must pass, and that the church on Earth holds the key. What if a forgotten relic, hidden inside an abandoned ship thought to have been lost at sea more than a century ago, suddenly reappeared and cast doubt on that belief? Who would seek to use it? Who would seek to destroy it? And whose lives would it forever change? Aidan Sharpe, a disbarred and penniless lawyer trying to rebuild his life on Ocracoke Island, finds love and destiny as he seeks the answers to these questions.

What are you reading this week?
